Acupuncture is an ancient practice in which very fine needles are inserted into the skin at strategic points on the body to relieve pain and treat disease.
The Chinese developed acupuncture centuries ago in accordance with the theory that energy flows through channels between the surface of the body and the bodies internal organs. Stimulating the acupoints clears energy blockages and encourages the normal flow of ‘qi’ (or energy) in the body.
Acupuncture consists of over 2,000 points located on the human body. These points are located on 12 main and eight secondary “meridians” or channels (specific lines or pathways around the human body that connect the internal organs energy with the body surface).
Pain and disease are the result of these channels becoming blocked, so, by placing needles into these blockages it allows healthy energy to be restored and normal function to return.
From a Western medicine view point the placement of acupuncture needles at specific pain points will precipitate the release of endorphins and opioids (the body’s natural painkillers). Acupuncture increases the production of one’s immune system cells (speeding healing and recovery) as well as the production of neurotransmitters and neurohormones in the brain. Research has now shown that there is evidence that stimulating acupuncture points enables electromagnetic signals to be relayed at a greater rate resulting in strong drug free pain relief, a reduction in any inflammatory condition and an increase in the blood circulation to diseased areas of the body.
When pain is relieved, patients feel a greater sense of well-being overall, physically and emotionally. As a result, they will heal faster, perform better and be able to continue a healthy active lifestyle.
Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine are recognised by the World Health Organization (WHO) as effective in treating the following:
It is common to feel very relaxed after an acupuncture treatment – this can last for several days. This is due to the brain releasing feel good chemicals that are the basis of pain relief and a sense of good well-being.
In reference to pain, acupuncture is an effective way to speed up the healing process, getting it moving when it has become stagnant. Most acupuncture points are located close to major nerves and by gently stimulating these points, the nervous system increases signals travelling along the path of the nerve, enhancing and accelerating the healing effect on the damaged tissue.
Chinese herbal medicine involves formulating plants and mineral substances to create a balanced and synergistic effect to rejuvenate the body. Chinese medicine focuses on treating the body holistically to preserve health rather than treating just the disease; herbal medicine helps to strengthen the body’s functions and prevent illness.
We prescribe both patent Chinese herbal medicines in pill or tablet form and herbal granules, which can be easily taken for your convenience. All of the Chinese herbal medicine dispensed are listed and regulated by the Australian Government Therapeutic Goods Administration for quality and safety.
Herbal formulas can be precisely modified according to each person’s specific needs, and they are very safe when prescribed correctly by a properly trained Dr of Chinese Medicine. People of any age or constitution can use them. Herbs can act on the body as powerfully as pharmaceutical drugs and should be treated with the same caution and respect.
Be careful about purchasing herbal medicines over the internet. Unregulated herbal medicines, such as some traditional medicines, may not be manufactured to the same quality and standard as regulated herbal medicines. Always consult your practitioner first as they have spent several years being trained to write specific and effective herbal prescriptions.
